Description
Are you looking for an engaging way to introduce the sounds of the alphabet to your French students without overwhelming them? These beginning sound sorts (en français!) will help your students focus on listening for and identifying beginning sounds in a wide variety of words.
This French alphabet beginning sound sorts resource includes a whole group AND an individual sorting activity for each letter of the alphabet. Students will say the name of the object seen on the card, and decide if it starts with the target sound or not. Because you will be first completing the sorting activity as a group before sending your students off on their own, they will be exposed to a wide variety of new vocabulary, and will be set up for success!
This French alphabet beginning sound sorts resource includes:
- Whole-group sorting cards (6 cards per letter – 3 that begin with the target letter, and 3 that do not)
- Title cards for each sort (for example, Aa/PAS Aa or Gg doux/Gg dur)
- A list of gestures that I use to help anchor each letter sound (feel free to change/adjust as needed!)
- 29 individual sorting activities that match the whole-group sorts (1 each for letters A-Z, PLUS 2 extra options for Ee, Cc and Gg).
I do this activity with my class every September, when introducing new letters. We do the whole group sort as a class using the coloured cards, and then students do the individual worksheets independently. We practice one sound/day, and I also teach them a gesture to associate with each sound. If you do one sound per day, this pack includes over 5 weeks worth of alphabet sorts! I have also included the gestures I use with my class for each letter, but feel free to change them up as you need.
This game is such a great way to build your students’ vocabulary – they will be saying a ton of new words out loud!
What are other teachers saying about these French alphabet beginning sound sorts?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This is a great resource to reinforce beginning letter sounds. I like using it after I teach the alphabet in 35 days. Thank you for creating these great resources!” — Sarah K.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Great resource for learning and reinforcing letter sounds. Also for developing new vocabulary. We used it a lot at the beginning of the year. Most students were able to work independently. Very valuable resource.” — Jelena S.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Once again, fantastic! I love that I am able to model the sort in a large format before asking the students to do the smaller sort. Great way to scaffold at the beginning of the year. It’s also another amazing way to introduce vocabulary and the students are really able to practice listening for that initial sound, which is such a valuable skill! Merci!” — Madame Henry
