This resource contains…
- 18 game boards in all (in both colour and black & white)
- Each board works on 7-8 different beginning sounds (all letters of the alphabet except w and x)
- Game boards are grouped so that you may play this game with up to 6 students at a time
How to play…
- Students will spin the spinner (made using a standard paperclip and pencil)
- Next, they will check their card for an image that begins with that letter’s sound
I suggest reviewing the name of each object on the card before beginning, and if students have difficulty identifying a picture right away, I encourage them to name each object again on their own and listen for its beginning sound.
You can choose to laminate the coloured cards and reuse them all year with Bingo chips, or print the black & white cards and glue them into their guided reading notebook and mark them by colouring the squares.
My students LOVE this game, especially if I let them use Bingo daubers or seasonal stamps! This is a game that I would play with a guided reading group that already knows most letter names and sounds in isolation – as review, practice for the letter sounds they don’t quite have yet, and/or as an introduction/warm up before we practice the reading strategy where they look at the first letter of an unknown word in their book.
This game is super easy to prep (print and cut!), and is intended to be done with your students in a small group setting.
