Here are 5 simple BLACK & WHITE Christmas literacy centres that are PERFECT for maternelle students in French immersion or at a francophone school.

These centres work on pre-reading and writing skills, so all students can be successful, despite it still being pretty early in the school year. Each centre has “Je peux” cards with clear instructions for students to foster their independence, as well as an explanation for the teacher and directions on what students need to do to complete each activity.

Each activity is quick to teach to your students, and works on concepts like letter recognitionbeginning soundsadding details to our stories, and handwriting.

These centres are in BLACK AND WHITE. No worries if your colour ink is running out! Save your money and just print on coloured card stock and your centres will be as beautiful as ever :)

The 5 activities included are:

  • Adding details to our stories – students will pick a card, draw it, and add more details to their drawing. They then will write a sentence to go with their picture
  • Beginning sounds sort – students will draw cards and sort them based on beginning sounds (R comme renne, P comme Père Noël, or L comme lutin). They will then colour the correct beginning sound for each word on the recording sheet
  • La liste de Père Noël – students will work on their handwriting while helping Santa with his list. They will draw a card, trace it with a white board marker to practice, then find & trace it on Santa’s list (their recording sheet)
  • Missing beginning sounds – students will draw a card, say the word, and listen for the beginning sound. They will then write the word on the recording sheet (all other letters except the beginning sound are provided)
  • Read, stamp, trace – students will read the word (picture clue provided), stamp the word, then trace the word on the recording sheets. If you don’t have alphabet stamps, students coud alternatively write the word with markers or build the word with magnetic letters.
