Make learning to decode simple French words fun and engaging with these no-prep worksheets! Do your students struggle with blending sounds together to decode new words as they read? Do they need practice identifying and reading certain letters within words?

If yes, then this resource is sure to help! The concept of this activity is simple, but I have seen it really make a difference with my students.

Grab this resource and others! in my French Science of Reading Decoding Activities Bundle!

This resource contains 28 different pages. Each page targets one letter of the alphabet (there are two for Cc & Gg — hard and soft sounds).

Students will find and colour the letter within each word or syllable, and then use the sound to help them read the words. Finding the sounds themselves and then having the coloured visual will really help your students remember to read the sound as a whole, and not try to decode each letter.

I often use these sheets whole-group when I teach a new letter to the class, but I also use them with my guided reading groups as well if there is a tricky letter that some students just aren’t mastering. I love being able to differentiate depending on my students’ individual needs!

Each page includes:

  • One target letter, identified in the bottom right-hand corner
  • An anchor word image for each target letter
  • 6+ syllables and 4+ words, each featuring the target letter, written in a “bubble” font, permitting students to colour the target letter
  • Any “silent letters” that don’t make their sound when decoding are written in gray. Any “son composés” are underlined to remind students to decode them as one sound

There are 28 pages in all. Check out the preview for more information!
