FRENCH Enseigner les sons composés – Interactive Notebook for French Sounds

Looking for a simple, done-for-you set of lesson plans and activities to follow for teaching or reviewing les sons composés, en français? Are you hoping for a product that will be easy to use in school OR during distance teaching… or when switching between the two?

This FRENCH Enseigner les sons composés Interactive Notebook is for you!

This resource includes four simple, quick activities to do with your French primary students each day, to teach or review 21 different sons composés. The activities focus on the sounds each spelling makes as well as which letters work together to form which sounds.

You can use the scripted lessons and activities to teach the sounds in any order you like, and you can spend as much or as little time on each sound as you choose. Once complete, your students will have a notebook full of activities documenting their learning.

This resource includes:

• 21 pages of exact lesson plans/scripts – one page for each sound
• Sound posters + 6 images that begin with each target sound (Note: there is one poster for each sound showing ALL spellings of that sound, plus a separate poster for each spelling on its own, for each sound)
• Smaller mini posters to show when a sound can also be represented by a single letter (Ex. « au » can also be written « o »)
• 4 simple activities per letter, to be completed by students and glued into a scribbler. The four activities are the same for each letter, to allow you to build a consistent routine
• A fun, gnome-themed review game that builds with each new sound

What exactly is this resource?

This program is the exact script I will follow and the exact lessons I will do with my grade one students to teach new sounds/reteach the sons composés they were previously exposed to in maternelle. You could also of course use this program to complement other activities you do with maternelle, première année, and/or deuxième année students.

Can this resource be used for distance teaching?

YES! If we ever switch back to distance teaching, I plan to send my students’ home with their notebooks, glue/scissors, and all pages they will need to finish the program at home. I will continue my sounds teaching via pre-recorded videos and/or Google Meets for each lesson, and students will be able to continue their notebooks at home.

Do I have to teach the sounds in the same order?

In a word — nope! This resource is a bit different than the version I use to teach the alphabet (Enseigner l’alphabet en 35 jours), in which I do suggest to follow the order I suggest. That’s because, with that resource, our students may have had no previous experience with listening for sounds within words, so I suggest starting with those that are easiest to hear.

By the time your students are working on their sons composés, it is likely that they have had previous exposure to/experience with listening for sounds in words. So, you should be totally fine to teach these sounds in whatever order you wish.

The timeline is flexible, too — you might want to spend one day per sound, a week per sound, two days per sound… whatever you like. Therefore, I haven’t titled any of the pages with “Day 1, Day 2”, etc. I did include review cards for each sound and suggest playing the gnome game at regular intervals, adding new sound cards, to ensure you are always doing some spiral review as you teach new sounds.

Note: This resource is not intended to be the *only* thing you do with your students to teach and review les sons composés, but I do hope it provides a consistent, effective jumping-off point for each sound!

The four activities for each letter are:

• Trace the sound – students will practice correct letter formation while writing the target sound
• Listen for the sound – students will glue 6 pictures (in back and white) into their notebook that contain the target sound.
• Find and colour – students will find and colour the all the spellings of the target sound hidden among a variety of sounds. They will also find and highlight the target letter in a silly sentence.
• Find and colour version two – students will find and colour the objects that contain with the target sound

I recommend having your students glue their activities into a coil-bound scribbler.
