FRENCH First Grade Math Unit – Subtraction Strategies within 20 (Soustraction)

Looking for a comprehensive, complete math unit in French for teaching strategies for subtraction within 20 (les stratégies de soustraction), designed for kindergarten and/or first grade students?

This “Math pour la première année” unit includes 10 complete lesson plans, 10 worksheets, 10 interactive notebook pages, an assessment, materials for a warm-up game, vocabulary cards, a référentiel, fluency cards, and more!

This unit has been specially crafted to provide young learners with a fun and enriching approach (via a workshop model) to explore a variety of subtraction strategies.

I have put TEN of my soustraction jusqu’à 20 lesson plans together for you, along with warm-up activities, whole-group activities, partner practice activities, independent worksheets & interactive notebook options, and more!

These lessons and materials have all been tested with my own students. They have been a huge factor in helping my students really master and understand subtraction and using correct French vocabulary to do so.

Note: This unit is an extension of Unit 10 (Subtraction Within 10). Many of the activities are similar, just reviewing and adjusting for bigger numbers. To help you save on prep time, I kept the vocabulary cards/référentiel pieces as much the same as was possible.

This math unit includes:

• Ten pre-made, easy-to-follow lesson plans. Each shows the skills being taught/practiced, materials lists, warm-up/show what you know ideas, a whole-group lesson, and a partner practice activity
• A variety of warm-up activities, including fluency cards and flash cards
• A hands-on partner activity for each day
• An independent math worksheet AND interactive notebook option to close out each lesson
• Clear instructions for structuring your math block
• A post-unit assessment to help you know if your students understand a variety of subtraction strategies and how to effectively choose which one to use at the end of the unit
• Various options for creating your student partner lists ahead of time

**Please note that some activities will require manipulates. I have done my best to only include manipulates that are found in most classrooms (snap cubes, two-sided counters, etc.). If you are missing any of the suggested manipulates, you are welcome to substitute for whatever you have!
