Guided Reading is SUCH an important part of maternelle, and where the magic really happens. However, Kindergarteners are often not 100% ready at the beginning of the year for small group time and centres. It takes practice, practice, and more practice! Description

Guided Reading is SUCH an important part of maternelle, and where the magic really happens. However, Kindergarteners are often not 100% ready at the beginning of the year for small group time and centres. Kindergarten guided reading takes practice, practice, and more practice!

But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t introduce them to reading and books, and start working on a few important print concepts in the meantime.

I like to start this unit about 2 weeks before I think my students will be ready for small groups (generally week 3 or 4, after we have been practicing centres for a week or two). My students get SO EXCITED that they can “read” at the close of this unit, that they are confident and eager to get started when we make the transition to small groups.

This pack will help you get your French kindergarten students ready for reading by introducing one to one correspondence and 6 new sight words. These lessons are intended to be done with your whole group. It is essential that students are given time to practice what they have learned.

This pack includes:

  • 2 weeks (10 days) of whole group guided reading lesson plans (warm up, new concept, practice)
  • Various activities to teach and review one to one correspondence
  • SIX emergent readers that practice the following sight words: regarde, voici, un, le, j’aime, les. Those are the only text used in the books (images are used to replace other words), so these readers REALLY give your students chance to practice!
  • The readers also build on one another and review words learned earlier in the week
  • Each reader has dots for students to touch when they say each word. They are in black and white so that students may colour them. I use these as the first books to go home in my students’ reading bags, and they LOVE them!

*Please note that one of the emergent readers is an editable template to use to create a book using photographs of your students (I still print them in greyscale). Prior to purchasing, please ensure that you are able to open Zip files. Also make sure you have either Powerpoint or Keynote for the editable mini book. Students LOVE seeing themselves and their friends in a book!
