Looking for a fun, engaging way to get your students speaking French and learning how to express their feelings and emotions en français? This fun sentiments jeu de communication orale is a great way to get ALL your students speaking!
Emotional literacy is SO important in the primary grades, but it can be a challenge to teach students the necessary vocabulary to help them learn to express themselves in a fun and engaging way.
This French feelings-themed classroom chant is easy to do, and easy to prep. Just print, laminate, and cut out the pieces and you are ready to play! I put the vocabulary cards in a basket, and put the heading on a piece of chart paper. This resource also includes everything you need to start a daily “How are You?” circle with your French primary students.
BUNDLE AND SAVE! Grab this chant as part of a bundle and save 20%!
How to play:
- Put the vocabulary cards in a basket and make sure the heading is on display. Sing the poem with your students a few times and review the vocabulary words on the cards.
- Choose a student to come draw the first card. They will say the name of the feeling on the card, using the sentence stem « Je me sens ______ ». If they don’t know, encourage your other students to help figure it out! I like to then have my whole class repeat the answer in a complete sentence: Je me sens _________!
- Once everyone knows what the vocabulary word is, your student can put the item on the chart paper (using tape or sticky tack), and the game continues. Repeat the poem and another student can choose a vocabulary card.
You may choose to have one card per student, or just choose a few words to work on at a time.
This resource includes…
- A simple, catchy poem for your whole class to sing to introduce each round of the game
- 40 vocabulary cards (in colour)
- The same 40 vocabulary cards in black & white
- Anchor chart materials and instructions for starting a daily “How are You?” circle with your students
This game is wonderful when you have the majority of the class at the carpet ready to get started, but a few stragglers finishing up their work. We start playing, and the stragglers are immediately motivated to get to the carpet as fast as they can!
This game will also give your students the opportunity to practice feelings vocabulary in a low-stakes, impersonal way, so that when they do end up feeling a certain feeling, they will already have the words they need in their vocabulary bank to successfully express it.
My students also use the game independently as a literacy centre, once they are experts.
