Description

Do your French primary students struggle with efficiently blending letter sounds together to read syllables? Are you looking for more ways to incorporate the Science of Reading in your French primary classroom?

If yes, then this resource is sure to help! Let’s stop encouraging our students to memorize and guess, and instead teach them to REALLY read new words.

The concept of this activity is simple, but I have seen it really make a difference with my students.

This resource contains 4 sound strips for 28 target letters (all letters of the alphabet, plus a second page for Cc & Gg to learn both their hard and soft sounds).

Each strip has it’s own target letter. Students will find the letter sound within each word, and then use the sound to help them read the words.

Enseignons ensemble members, this resource was in the July 2022 resource pack.

There are two versions of each strip. In the first version, the target sound is coloured, and « les lettres muettes » are greySons composés are underlined. Regular letters that “talk” are black. This format will help your students who are just getting used to French sounds remember to reach each son composé as one sound, and to not pronounce the silent letters.

In the second version, ALL of the letters are black. These strips contain all of the same words and order of words as the coloured strips, but they are trickier as students will have to recognize the sons composés and the silent letters on their own.

You can choose which version is best for your students, depending on their needs and abilities!

I use these sound strips during guided reading, and will often send some strips home in my students’ reading bags for extra practice when I teach a new sound. I love being able to differentiate depending on my students’ individual needs!

Each letter has its own page. Each page contains four blending strips. Some strips include only simple sounds, and some strips include les sons composés. Use whichever strips work best for you and your students!

Each strip also includes a picture clue of an anchor word for each of the target sounds.

Easy prep – just print, laminate, and cut!
