FRENCH Rhyme Caterpillar Puzzles – les rimes en maternelle

Looking for a simple way for your French primary students to practice rhyming during your literacy centres or small group time?

Rhyming is SUCH an important skill to practice!! Playing with rhymes improves overall language skills in our students, and is a big precursor to learning to both read AND write.

Research shows a correlation between rhyming mastery and future reading preparedness in children, so we definitely want to make sure our students become experts at rhyming, especially if they haven’t had much practice at home!

These rhyming caterpillar puzzles are a great way to get your students practicing their rhyming skills.

This resource includes:

• 10 rhyming caterpillar puzzles in colour
• The same 10 rhyming caterpillar puzzles in black & white
• 2 recording sheet options
• Each puzzle has a caterpillar head with an image of the target rhyme, and four body pieces that match

How to use:

Cut out and laminate the cards. Students will choose a caterpillar head and find the four rhyming matches. To make them self-correcting, you might want to put matching stickers on the backs of each puzzle before laminating.

There are also two (optional) recording sheets – one for recording all 10 caterpillars, and one for recording one completed caterpillar.

This activity makes a great independent literacy centre, or a great guided reading warm-up game!
