Les mots croisés pour les sons composés (FRENCH Sounds Crossword Challenges)

Looking for a challenge for your more advanced French primary students, who already have son composés and decoding mastered? Use these French crossword puzzles and vocabulary sheets to help your students practice their sounds, critical thinking skills, and encourage acquisition of new words!

This resource includes:

• 10 crossword puzzles (one target sound per puzzle)
• 10 vocabulary sheets (5 new words to define)
• Answer keys for the crossword puzzles

The sheets for each sound are intended to be copied front-to-back. Students will first complete the crossword puzzle, using the provided clues and critical thinking/process of elimination to help them solve it. Then, they will take a closer look at some of the words from the puzzle and write their definitions (in their own words) on the back.

This resource will help students use critical thinking, practice their sounds, and learn a variety of new words en français!

I have included answer keys for the crossword puzzles to help you quickly correct, but didn’t provide one for the definitions as there might be a variety of ways to explain what each word means. I recommend using these sheets for differentiation with students who already know their sounds as you are teaching them to/practicing them with the rest of the class, or as an optional « j’ai fini » challenge!

NOTE: This resource is not at a typical level of difficulty for my store. Maternelle students will likely not be able to complete it. I created it as an enrichment activity for a student in première année who already knew all their sounds and how to read difficult words as differentiation – they are still working on the same target sounds as the rest of the class, but in a way that provides a challenge for them. This student was also being taught virtually (note though that this resource is NOT digital) and had parental support at home to help with the definitions portion of the resource.
