French Write the Room Écris la Salle – Decoding Sentences – Les phrases simples

Here is a fun, simple, low-prep activity to get your French primary students decoding sentences with a target vowel sound during literacy centres! And, it’s aligned with the Science of Reading.

This French Write the Room / Écris la salle centre is easy to prep and simple for students to complete. It will help them work on essential reading skills — decoding and comprehension.

Just print the cards for the set(s) you wish to use and photocopy the recording sheet that matches. This set includes six different sets – 18 cards featuring simple sentences for each of Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu, and Éé.

How to use:

• Place the cards you have prepped around the room
• Provide students with a clip board and the recording sheet (each recording sheet is two pages, so be sure to copy double sided)
• To play, students will walk around the room and find each of the 18 cards
• They will read the sentence, find the numbered box that matches on the recording sheet, and circle the illustration in the box that best matches what they read.

This product includes:

• 6 different sets of cards/recording sheets
• Each set includes 18 different sentence cards in colour, each featuring a target vowel sound (“in colour” = the target sound is in red and silent letters are in gray)
• The same 18 different sentence cards are also included in plain black text
• Any non-decodable high frequency words (ex. un, est) have a heart underneath to remind students they are words we know by heart
• 1 two-page recording sheet for each set

You can do this activity whole-group, and have students all walk around to complete their sheets at once, or you can use this activity as an independent literacy centre (that’s what I do!).
