Here is a fun, simple, low-prep activity to get your French primary students decoding and encoding words with a target son composé during literacy centres! And, it’s aligned with the Science of Reading.

This French Write the Room / Écris la salle centre is easy to prep and simple for students to complete. It will help them work on essential reading and writing skills — encoding and decoding. Just print the cards you wish to use and photocopy the recording sheet that matches.

This resource is a bundle of the following sounds: on, ou, au/eau, ch, oi, an/en, in/ain and ai/ei.

How to use:

• Place the cards you have prepped around the room
• Provide students with a clip board and the recording sheet
• To play, students will walk around the room and find each of the 18 cards for the vowel you chose
• If you use the cards with images, they will find each picture, say the word, and then write the sounds they hear as best they can. Silent letters are already written for them on the sheet. To make it self-correcting, glue the cards with the word on the back of each corresponding picture so students can check their attempts.
• If you use the word cards, they will read the word, find the picture that matches on the recording sheet, and copy the word. You can have them copy the word as-is, or segment it into sounds using the orthographic mapping sheet.
