Description

Looking for a quick & easy way to help warm your students up for guided reading?

As lower elementary teachers, we all know the struggle of not having enough time to fit it all in during our guided reading lessons!

If you’re short on time, consider adding this activity to your guided reading warm up toolbox. It’s quicksimple, and easily differentiated depending on your groups. Plus, your students will love trying to climb their beanstalks as fast as they can!

Set up is easy!

  • Print out and laminate the cards your students will need. There are cards for uppercase & lowercase vowels and consonants, syllables (consonant + vowel and a couple vowel + consonant), and sons composés.
  • You can also print out the cover pages to help keep you organized. I like to punch a hole in the top corner of each card, and keep each set on their own binder ring for easy, organized access.

How to play:

  1. Give each student in your group a beanstalk card that contains some letters/sounds that will be easy for them, and some letters that might be tricky.
  2. Students will start at the bottom of the beanstalk, and read each letter/syllable as quickly as they can. If they get stuck, you can help them, but they go back to the bottom and start again.
  3. Once a student makes it to the top of the beanstalk, you can end the game or give them another. My students love when I set up a sand timer and they see how many they can read before the sand runs out!

Some students may find the letter cards too tricky, if they don’t know many letters yet. That’s why you’ll also find an editable page at the end of this resource.

When you open the resource using Adobe reader, you will be able to type any letters, syllables, or sounds you want (up to three letters per circle).

For struggling students, you can easily personalize the game – just choose 2-3 letters to type in the circles (1-2 they know and 1-2 they don’t), and have these target letters repeat up the beanstalk to ensure everyone can find success!

**If you want your letters to look like mine, you will need to download the (free for personal use) font KG Primary Penmanship. You can find it on TPT by clicking right here.

*This download entitles the purchaser to use it in ONE classroom only. Thank you so much for respecting my time and effort!*
