Description

A super cute, super fun French game/literacy centre to add to your collection of winter-themed resources! Your primary students will think they are using each lost baby polar bear’s “clue” to help them find their dads… what they will really be doing is sorting words based on their beginning sounds ;)

Nothing like learning & practicing important skills without even realizing it!

This game is simple to play and simple to prep – just print, cut the cards, and laminate.

This resource contains:

  • Game boards in colour for the following letters/sounds: a, b, c (hard & soft), d, e, f, g (hard only), j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, v, z, ch
  • A blank black & white game board you can colour and use for any letter
  • 2 versions of recording sheets, where students can write or draw which baby bears go with which papa

How to play:

  • Students should practice 2-4 letter sounds at a time
  • Choose letters that they are familiar and comfortable with
  • Students will put all the cards for their letters in a pile
  • Next, they will draw one card at a time, say the name of the object, and sort according to its beginning sound
  • The goal of this game is for students to play independently, in a literacy-centre style setting

This is a game was designed more as a way for students to practice their developing skills, rather than for teaching new ones. Therefore, please note that I did my best to select images as “clues” that would be frequently used words that most students already know. If I could not find 4 images that students should be able to identify pretty easily, then I did not include the letter.

I also did not make game boards and cards for those letters that don’t have an evident, easy-to-hear beginning sound. I suggest addressing those letters in a whole-group or small-group setting, where the teacher can explain for example that “yes, hibou DOES start with h, but you can’t hear the h… so you have to put that word in your brain and remember it!”

Another suggestion is not giving students two letters to work on at the same time that have the same sound – there is no way for them to know just by speaking if carotte starts with c or k, for example :)
