Looking for a way to help your French primary students master correct letter formation? Young students needs LOTS of practice correctly forming the letters of the alphabet!
These black & white letter formation cards are easy to prepare and are a fun way to quickly practice and review target letters!
This resource includes:
- One black & white card to practice correct letter formation for each letter of the alphabet
Each card features:
- A space for students to build the target letter (majuscule et minuscule)
- A dot to show them where to start
- An example of how to correctly form each letter (with arrows)
- An image of an anchor word that begins with the target letter
These low-prep letter formation cards can be used in a wide variety of ways.
I like to use them like this:
1. As a warm-up during Guided Reading
I use these cards to either review the letter we practiced the session before, or to quickly practice our current target letter. I print them on coloured card stock and laminate them so we can use them over and over again. I have an extensive collection of manipulates that students can use to correctly build the letter within the outline.
2. To record the letters we know in our guided reading scribblers
Once a student has mastered a letter, I like to keep a record of that in their guided reading scribbler. For this, I just print the cards on plain white paper. Then, I let my students chose a “permanent” way to show that they know how to make the target letter – stickers, stamps, Bingo daubers, etc! Finally, they glue the card into their scribbler.
There is also an image on each mat to help you reinforce the sound(s) that each letter makes that matches all of my other alphabet products, as well as a référentiel showing the correct path of motion.
You could also use these cards as an independent literacy centre, especially after students have tried them a few times with your support!
