Description

Looking for a way to help your French primary students master correct letter formation? Young students needs LOTS of practice correctly forming the letters of the alphabet!

This independent letter formation activity is easy to prepare and is a fun way to have your students show you what they know about letter formation.

This is an activity that I have my students complete independently, either during a literacy centre, or while I am working one-on-one with another student in their guided reading group.

This resource includes:

  • one colour “tapis” with space for your students to build and write each letter (print as many copies as you need, depending on the size of your groups)
  • the same tapis in a black & white version so you can save on ink
  • three sets of alphabet cards (majuscule & minuscule, majuscule only, and minuscule only)
  • two different recording sheet options

*Before doing this activity, it is important that you have explicitly taught and had your students practice the correct path of motion for all of the letter cards you include.

There are also an image on each card to help reinforce the sound(s) that each letter makes. The chosen word for each letter matches all of my other alphabet products.

How to prepare and use this activity:

  • Laminate the cards and the « Construis la lettre » mat of your choice
  • Students will choose one card from the pile at a time, place it on the mat, and use objects (mini erasers, snap cubes, buttons, play dough, etc.) to build the letter(s) on the card
  • They can then practice writing the letter on their own using a white board marker and the provided space at the bottom of the mat
  • Once they complete one letter, they can erase and choose another card.

If you prefer your students to have a more “permanent” record of which letters they complete, I have also provided a black and white version of the mat, and some recording cards. Students could use stickers, stamp markers, or even Bingo daubers to build the letters they draw and then glue their recording cards into their guided reading scribbler.

*This download entitles the purchaser to use it in ONE classroom only. Thank you so much for respecting my time and effort!*
