How to use this resource:
- At the beginning of each month, choose which words you want your students to learn. This resource includes 25 words, but each teaching month typically contains no more than 20 teaching days, giving you some flexibility.
- Check the vocabulary words I’ve used – if you use a different word in your region, or if there is something you’d like to change, re-order, etc., the slides are editable!
- Each day, show your students the « Quel est le mot du jour? » slide. Encourage them to guess (in complete sentences!) what the word of the day will be (you can provide clues).
- Once students guess, flip to the word of the day slide. The slide will show a picture of the word, plus the word written below (with the correct determinant).
- Give students their black & white picture of the word (they will fit in a regular notebook, 4 per page). Have them colour it.
- Next, students will write the word. I ALWAYS do this part as a group, and we write the word sound by sound. First, we count how many words we will write. Then, we write the determinant. Finally, we count how many sounds are in the mot du jour and write the word, one sound at a time (not one letter at a time). This practice has helped my students SO MUCH with their writing! It also allows them to learn and review French sounds all throughout the year.
- Finally, your students will glue the mot du jour in a notebook/scribbler for at-home review and practice. Then, you can use the phonemic awareness “game” slides at the end to play with the sounds in the word.
This routine typically takes less then 10 minutes/day, but your students will practice so many skills in that time!
This resource includes…
- 25 Halloween-themed vocabulary word slides (you will need Google Slides™ to open them, but you can download them as a PowerPoint or pdf to present if you prefer)
- 1 “Quel est le mot du jour?” slide
- 5 phonemic awareness activity slides
- Student word pages in two printing options (4 words/page; all different words AND 4 words/page; all the same words)
Enseignons ensemble members, this resource was included in the September 2022 resource pack.
This resource pairs very well with my Halloween-themed Oral Communication Chant. The chant will allow your students to practice the words they learn via Mot du jour all month long. Click HERE to check it out!
